6:46 am
13 -- today is the #th day. 36 days altogether and it will be another hot one and it will remain hot for the next couple of days so we'll just add on to the numbers and we'll see what the tally is at the end of the summer and at the end of the year but it is certainly impressive already. -- today is the 13th day. there are had spots where we are seeing our temperatures in the 60s. right here in washington, 75 degrees. 76 in annapolis. dulles, # 9 degrees. manassas, 68 degrees -- dulles, 69 degrees. there was some thunderstorm ask tuft. this is out to the west moving across we were portions of maryland now and can you see how that is tracking to the north and east so i don't expect it to impact our area. we are watching this other area of authority activity. some convective activity there across portions of the the midwest an pushing into the ohio valley. and there are some strong thunderstorms associated with that. for us though for the forecast for today, here is what we're
6:47 am
looking at. some early sunshine. i do think we'll see some loud during the course of the afternoon. scattered thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening. high again above normal, about 93 degrees. your five-day forecast, for tomorrow, 94 with some isolated thunderstorms. thursday, 93. isolated thunderstorms. and then yes, you're reading it correctly. friday and saturday, upper 90s. it will feel like 100. probably have i heat advisory in effect again as we head into the weekend. a hot one on tap. sorry about that. >> is your long-range forecast looking any better? >> that is you good question. oh, no, it does not look better. tucker was looking at it recently and a lot of hot weather. sorry about that. it is time for act weather guys. it is a segment where tucker

barnes and i put our big heads together to answer your most pressing questions weather- relate or otherwise. today's question is from w. d. prip let who wants to know what is the difference in the july 16th 3.6 tremor here, the 5.0 earthquake and the earthquake in haiti. please explain the richter scale. mr.triplet, if you are indeed a man, you could be a woman, so i don't know. mr.or mrs. triplet or ms. triplet, we do not have time to explain the richter scale. we can give a little overview. there are mathematical equations involved. it was come up with but a man named charles richter. we don't use the richter scale only anymore. tucker barnes has more on this. >> thank you, tony. here what is happened. richter scale not too effective i guess is the right word i'm
6:49 am
looking for once you get into the higher magnitude earthquakes. it has been modified and improved over the years. now, we use what is called moment magnitude scale so sort of a hybrid between the richter scale and this new scale. earthquakes are very, very complicated. we are most interested in the energy release when had an earthquake occurs. >> that is what causes the damages. for geologists there is all kinds of information that they want to know. number is so that, in general, we all understand what kind of damage an quick does. >> it gets very complicated. it all depends exactly how the fault is slipping, what direction it is slipping in, the depth of the earthquake to
6:50 am
determine how much damage is done. so it is very complicated. >> i think what this person is getting at is what is the difference between a 3.6 and an 8. 0 and as i i think most people may understand now, it is not -- the difference is tomb a certain factor. for example, a 4. 0 earthquake is a certain number of times worse than a 3.0. not necessarily times one or times 10. >> we have a graphic. >> we do have a graphic. we can talk about some of these earthquakes that we've seen recently and over the years. >> this is kind of of amazing. our 3.6, i mentioned this on friday. we get 49,000 earthquakes per year at that intensity so they are fairly common on planet earth. once you get into the higher intensities, they are much less frequent and that is why they have a tendency to die lot more damage. they don't happen very often. -- to do a lot more damage.
